The People's Park and Dargle River Regeneration Project was formed around February 2004 by a group who were "interested in the regeneration of the Dargle River and the People's Park, to meet the needs of all the people of Bray". A letter to Bray Town councillors from the committee went on to stress that they were not seeking funding at that time, but were asking for co-operation and support "so that we can work together in partnership on this important project which will be of benefit to all the people of Bray".
They set out their main objectives as:-
- Cleaning up of the Dargle River bank on both sides;
- open existing public walkways on the Dargle River;
- remove all rubbish and maintain flora;
- the provision of new bins for refuse and an enclosed area for dogs to go to the toilet and dog bins and scoops to be provided;
- new seating to be provided for young and old alike;
- the upgrading of footpaths in the Park;
- make the river wall safer by erecting railings;
- the upgrading of the bandstand;
- the planting of flowerbeds and trees;
- provision of fencing, similar to that in Sidmonton Park;
- to involve local people in the project;
- public awareness of environmental issues affecting the People's Park and Dargle River;
- bylaws to be enforced, particularly in relation to the consumption of alcohol;
- to educate young and old about the flora, fauna and wildlife by using projects and information boards;
- signs to be erected informing the public of the rules and their duties when using the People's Park;
- the playground should be developed to meet the needs of all children. As we live in a multicultural society, the play area would incorporate activities that reflect cultural diversity.
They went on to say that they would be grateful for any suggestions and/or recommendations in relation to the Dargle River Restoration Project.
The letter was signed by committee members Sandra Griffith and Elizabeth Medcalf.
Between now and December 2005 they hope to achieve:-
- Cleaning up of the river bank on both sides;
- open existing public walkways;
- remove all overgrown flora;
- supply litterbins and dog bins;
- supply seating for young and old alike;
- to clean up the river bed;
- replanting of flowerbeds and trees;
- to involve local residents in the project.
This group is in the process of planning a Clean Up Day for the People's Park. We'll post details on this web site as soon as they are available.
